Frequently Asked Questions

Q - Can you help with dogs that are always pulling on their leash during walks?

A - Yes! I offer a focused 2-session loose leash walking program designed to make your walks calmer and more enjoyable. If your dog struggles with leash reactivity, we’ll start with a behaviour assessment so I can create a personalized plan that addresses the root of the problem. Whether it’s basic leash manners or reactivity, I’d be happy to guide you toward stress-free, enjoyable walks with your dog.

Q - What age can I start training my new puppy?

A - Starting early sets the stage for a well-mannered, confident dog. Ideally, puppies should remain with their mother and littermates until 10–12 weeks to develop essential social skills. If your puppy comes home at 8 weeks, we can begin gentle training right away to build positive habits from the start. It’s also crucial to focus on socialization before 16 weeks of age, as this is the critical window for shaping a well-adjusted companion. My Puppy Essentials program is the perfect way to give your new pup a head start!

Q - Can aggression and anxiety in dogs actually be resolved?

A - With positive reinforcement, confidence-building exercises, and a personalized behaviour modification plan, most dogs learn to feel calmer and respond more appropriately to their triggers. It takes patience and consistency, but many dogs with these challenges go on to live happy and balanced lives.

Q - Can my old dog be trained?

A - Absolutely! Senior dogs can thrive with training as long as it’s done within safe and comfortable limits. Learning new skills keeps their minds active, provides valuable enrichment, and is a wonderful way to strengthen the bond between you and your dog.

Q - How many sessions will my dog need?

A - This is very dependant on several variables. Basic obedience might take just a few sessions, while issues like leash reactivity or anxiety may require a longer plan. I’ll assess your dog and recommend the best plan of action.

Q - Do you guarantee results?

A - Because dogs are living beings and every situation is unique, no trainer can ethically guarantee results. What I can promise is to give you proven tools, personalized guidance, and full support to help you succeed.

Q - What forms of payment do you take?

A - Payment will be required by e-transfer at the time of booking.

Q - What is your cancellation/refund policy?

A - Refunds can be provided by e-transfer up to 48 hours after payment has been received by Better Dog Behaviour. Cancellation of an appointment is free to reschedule with more than 24 hours notice. Short notice cancellation (ie less than 24 hours) may result in a $25 rescheduling charge.

Q - Why do positive reinforcement trainers claim to be science-based?

A - Positive reinforcement (R+) training is rooted in the well-established principles of learning theory and behavioural science, especially operant conditioning (learning by consequences) and classical conditioning (learning by association). By keeping stress low and motivation high, this approach helps dogs learn more effectively while building their confidence in the process.
